If you don't know what tapping is then you've been missing out. EFT, which stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques, has become more popular as a therapy tool over the last few years and the best thing about it is you can do it yourself, for free!
EFT was originally founded by Gary Craig who describes the technique as an emotional form of acupuncture but instead of sticking needles in the points on the body, you tap on them to stimulate the vibration. His theory is that trauma, thoughts and negative emotions become stuck in the body's energy pathways, or meridians. By addressing these issues and tapping on the end points of these meridians, the blockages can be released and the energy can flow freely again.
You can use this technique on anything from pain, disease, anxiety and depression to sports performance, memory enhancement, vision improvement and even to curb cravings. These are just a few examples, the list could be endless! EFT can provide results where other methods haven't and issues that have been persistent for many years can often be cleared up in minutes. That's not to say that it could take longer, it's important to let go of expectations and be open to change when working with EFT.
So how do I do it you ask? You can try it right now! See the illustration and follow these steps:
1. Think of something that's bothering you right now, it could be a pain, a feeling, a bad memory, anything that you can measure on a scale of intensity. We'll use a scale of 0 to 10, 10 being the most intense and 0 being neutral (no pain or negative feeling). This is so you can compare how you feel after each round, the aim being to get to 0.
2. The next step is the set up statement or psychological reversal. To do this you would tap on the karate chop point while addressing the issue you want to work on. The basic statement goes something like this: "Even though (I have this pain, I feel angry about..., I have this cigarette craving, etc), I deeply and completely love and accept myself anyway". This would be repeated 3 times.
3. Now you will tap on the points on the face and upper body while saying some reminder phrases about the issue. The order of tapping points isn't that important but it does help to remember them if you do it in the order shown. Reminder phrases would look like this: "this pain", "this anger", "this craving", etc. Notice these are negative statements, first we want to clear out these negatives.
4. After completing the first round, recheck the feeling on the 0-10 scale, notice if it's changed. If still there, or stronger even, then repeat the psychological reversal this time something like this: "even though I still have this pain, anger, etc, I deeply and completely..." Notice the slight change at the beginning of the statement.
5. Tap on the points around the face and upper body again this time using reminder phrases like, "this remaining pain", "I'm still angry", etc.
This can go on until the feeling has been diminished or reduced to a level you're happy with. This is just the "basic recipe". It can become more complex when going into issues and we can even start putting in positive phrases. I will be sharing EFT example sessions on common subjects that you can try out and practice to see how it can be more effective using language and visualisation techniques to get to the root cause. There is also a short cut method developed by Robert Smith that I will talk about in a future post. If there are any issues you'd like to see examples on then please contact me and let me know! (I'm also available for online private or group EFT sessions for a fee).
